Ancient China

The fifth graders were busy learning about Ancient China this month. They studied about The Great Wall of China, emperors, the economy and government. To end our unit, frequent East Lake Academy visitors, Val Maxwell and Manny Flores, shared photos with the class from their trip to China. They also helped the students make paper Chinese lanterns, and taught the students how to eat with chop sticks while feasting on sticky rice. It was a great way to wrap up our unit.

Spanish 4th – 8th Grade | 2016 National Spanish Exam

Señora González has done it yet again!  Congratulations to our middle school students, who attained national recognition for their excellent performance on the 2016 National Spanish Exam. Of the 36 East Lake Middle School students who took part in this year’s National Spanish Exam, 35 placed in the Honorable Mention level or above, which equates to  97.2%!  This year, ELA students earned a total of 8 gold, 14 silver, and 9 bronze medals, along with 4 honorable mentions.  “Attaining a ..

As the year comes to a close, the fifth grade students are working on their final research paper. The students were tasked with writing about a famous person or event of their choosing. The paper is the last in a series of steps we have learned the past year in Language Arts. ELA 6th Grader Gigi Young Wins Midwest Section Championship for Synchronized Ice Skating Gigi’s enthusiasm for ice skating began when she was 7 years old.  She began competing in solo performances and later decided to join a synchronized skating team and fell in love with the sport.  Since then, she has spent several hours each day training on and off ice to stay competitive.  Skating has been a HUGE commitment and has required tough decisions with time management to balance school and ska..

Physical Education

At the start of the New Year the students were introduced to volleyball and badminton. The volleyball skills we have covered include:  Underarm pass (bump), underarm serve, overarm serve, setting, and blocking and spiking the ball over the net.  As students develop and refine their skills they will participate in volleyball games to reinforce the skills taught.  Third grade students are currently working on a collage based off  Pablo Picasso’s artwork Three Musicians . Picasso was one of the artists who coined the term collage in the beginning of the 20th century and it still is a popular art term used today! In fifth grade, we enjoyed an afternoon of Science hands-on centers to wrap up the first trimester of learning. Each center gave the students a chance to use their previous knowledge to delve further into their group work. The centers included microscope work, ramps, planes, scale work, and the students built shapes to test weight limits.
