First Grade News

Ever wonder what a kitchen counter is made out of? How about how a diamond forms? The First Graders read about these interesting and fascinating facts and worked with other rocks and minerals. They were put into groups to examine different types of rocks; granite, sandstone, basalt and obsidian. Each group listed and observed rocks to find out their properties (example: hardness, color, and shape).  The students used their five senses to draw what they found. Then they had to answer questions about where are rocks can be found and how they are used.
Student 1: Rocks can be found in rivers, oceans, in caves and in forests.
Student 2: Rocks are used to hold plants.
Student 3: Rocks are used for houses and even things in it.
It was great to see how well they worked together during the lesson and shared their findings.
